teppe. Sand storms are not of unfrequent occurrencein these vast plains. Their approach is seen ata long distance, and when they are of moderatebreadth it is not difficult to avoid them; but when, as sometimes happens, they extend overmany miles in width, there is real danger. Adense black cloud is seen rolling at a greatheight over the plain, sweeping along with feai-ful velocity. Its course is watched with eagerinterest, for no one can tell which way it mayturn. Instinct warns animals of the approach-ing danger, and they rush away at full speed.The scene is an exciting one when such a stormreaches the pastures. A confused mass, madeup of thousands of camels, horses, and oxen, isseen rushing madly on, while the herdsmen arestriving to direct their fligl)* away from thetrack of the tempest.
