Text Appearing Before Image:
Her insolent enemy was over-thrown, and I hadnt done it. A champion, three inches shorter than myself, had come inand dealt the blow. I was in such a rage ofmortification that I should have liked to thrashthe Captain and Bedford too. The first I knowI could have matched; the second was a toughlittle hero. And it was he who rescued the dam-sel while I stood by! In a strait so odious, sudden, and humiliating, what should I, whatcould I, what did I do ? Behind the lion and snake there is a brick walland marble balustrade, built for no particular rea-son, but flanking three steps and a grassy terrace, which then rises up on a level to the house win-dows. Beyond the balustrade is a shrubberyof more lilacs and so forth, by which you canwalk round into another path, which also leadsup to the house. So as I had not charged—ah !wo is me—as the battle was over, I—I just wentround that shrubbery into the other path, and soentered the house, arriving, like Fortinbras in LOVEL THE WIDOWER. 101

Thiswas no other than Bulkeley, my Lady B.s first-class attendant. When the Captain fell amidsthis screams and curses, he called for Bulkeley: and that individual made his appearance, witha little Scotch cap perched on his powdered head. Hullo! whats the row year? says Goliab, entering. Kill that blackguard! Hang him, killhim ! screams Captain Blacksheep, rising withbleeding nose. I say, whats the row year? asks the gren-adier. Off with your cap, Sir, before a lady! callsout Bedford. 102 HAEPEKS NEW MONTHLY MAGAZINE. HofF with my cap! you be bio— But he said no more, for little Bedford jumpedsome two feet from
