Lean and ascet-ic Ravenna has acertain exquisiterigidity in itscharm, like thatof a crucifix—like that of thestrange, severe,and sumptuouscrucifix of en-graved silver disksin the Cathedral.The streets arelong and straight,with sharp angles,rarely a curve:you can lookhalf - way across the city, and see the light throughany one of its great gateways. Andthe houses are almost all flat; theyare large, severe, with iron bars over thelower windows; they have rarely a bal-cony or any exterior decoration. And,in all this, there is a form of charm asinherent as in the severe art of mosaic.In Ravenna mosaic obtains a qualityhardly known elsewhere, a quality ofsoftness, almost a diaphanous quality.The colors of mosaic in Venice are thecolors of Venetian water, as it is stainedby clouds and by the hard bright reflec-tions of things: Venetian mosaic is waterturned to stone. But in Ravenna itscolors are those of the sky above them.I have seen, at sunset, a sky in which 622 HARPERS MONTHLY MAGAZINE. I could distinguish the exact shades ofcolor, certain purples and reds and bluishyellows, which I had seen in the mosaicsof S. Vitale, in the birds and beasts andfruits in the central roof of the choirthere. I have seen, at sunset, the sub-tlest green of S.
