he added, Come on, Mr. Umber, andset awhile in the Lobster, and Ill expoundthe matter to you. You know, last season, Mr. Umber, theLobster was plumb disreputable-looking. Ihad laid out to tar the upper decks andwhitewash her topsides come this spring.But just about boat - painting time alongcomes a man from down Boston way sell-ing paint. He comes along every so-so, justabout when youve made up your mind hesdead and aint coming. I took some lead andcolors off him for the boats. But thatdidnt satisfy him. Something seemed tobe a-working on his brain; put me in mindof a blackfish sucking the bait off the hookwithout taking holt. T last he gets up and walks out over thebridge, and stands in the road and takesmost general observations on the Lobster. When are you going to give her a coatof paint ? he says. Aint, says I, but whitewash. Paint d be better, says he. So would a gold sign up there, I says.i And velveteen carpets on the floor, and gilt-framed pictures of the family on the walls.

When I movethe Lobster to Kingdomcome, praps Ill callon you for jasper and sapphire paint forher, I told him. Stop your talking, he says, and getdown to business. Twont cost you a cent. I dont want to steal paint. Im anhonest man, says I. Dont have to steal, says he. Illpaint your house for you, and be glad to doit. Now listen. Then he gives me a long discourse onthe pictureness of the Lobster, and how itwas a landmark for miles up and down thebay, which I knew afore he was born. Thenhe addressed on the text of the value ofpublicity, and finally come to port by say-ing he wanted to put a notice of his painton the roof of the Lobster. Couldnt see it, I couldnt. Where wouldall the pictureness and landmarkedness bewith that sign up there? Next thing somepilot d be telling the man at the wheel tokeep to the deep channel by making dueeast from the barrel buoy till the Hotel dePaint-sign was
