In summer-time Yakutsk may be reached by steam-ers, which, since the opening of theTrans-Siberian Railway, ply pretty fre-quently up and down the Lena, the thirdgreat river of northern Asia, two thou-sand five hundred miles in length, whosewaters drain an area of about eight hun-dred thousand square miles. Toward the end of January the expedi-tion should reach Yakutsk, capital of theprovince of that name, which covers one-third of Siberia. Yakutsk is the resi-dence of a Governor (under the Governor-General of Eastern Siberia at Irkutsk),contains about 10,000 inhabitants, and isconnected by telegraph with St. Peters-burg.
