pay for whenable, the generous young Senator re-marked. Phil was overcome with grat-itude, and when the artful politicianquestioned him as to the name and stand-ing of the matronly Mrs. Connors (say-ing nothing of Miss Mary Ellen, ofwhom he appeared to take no notice),Phil proudly led him to where the ladiessat and introduced him to them. Alas, poor Phil! How could he havebeen so eager to play into the scheminghands of a rival who was already enjoy-ing a tremendous advantage? Hes a lo-tarrier wid women, Mrs.Connors whispered to Phil, when she gota chance. What divil led you to bringhim and her together? But kape cool, and do ye lose no slape; oill cook hismutton wid Mary Ellen. Ill tell her ofRosie Kellv, thats on the streets throughhim. Mrs. Connors undoubtedly did pour allthis hot and scalding warning into MaryEllens ear. And equally surely did Mary Ellenand the Senator meet in Phil Mahonyssaloon three or four nights out of everyseven, until, at the end, they were prop-erly married.

Meditations of an J- BY ADRIAN IT is a pleasant thing to sit here, thisrainy afternoon, with the books andthe collection close at hand. Ihave certainly been arranging that col-lection for ten years, and it is not ar-ranged yet. If these things continue toincrease in numbers I shall have to resortto the methods of that old opium-swiller,De Quincey—lock the door, abandon theaccumulations, and seek a new lodgingwhere I may begin all over again. I be-lieve there is a tribe of Indians some-where in Alaska who have the pleasingcustom of burning their wigwams whenthey find that their goods and chattelsare becoming oppressively overcrowded, and starting life afresh, unburdened bypersonal property. I think I will go toAlaska and collect totem-poles. A distin-guished Justice of the Supreme Court ofthe United States, now deceased, used tocollect almanacs, even those of Ayer andJosh Billings. Why he did it I cannotimagine, for he never made a joke in hislife; he was as dry as the pages of theAnn
