Unfortunately,however, as Koldeweys workmen dugdeeper into the mound they found theinterior of the main building in a hope-less state of ruin, so that up to the pres-ent the detailed arrangement of therooms of the palace has not been ascer-tained. Presumably, the Assyrian pal-aces were modelled upon those of thesouth, and the better preserved edificesfound by Layard and Botta in the cityof Nineveh about the middle of the lastcentury may serve as a general guide.Under the circumstances it is fortunatethat numerous fragments of inscriptionswhich contain the name of Nebuchadnez-zar leave no doubt as to the builder ofthe edifice in the Kasr mound. The most remarkable monument thathas as yet been brought to light in thepalace area is a large stela of dolerite,over three feet high, with a picture of theHittite storm-god sculptured on it, ac-companied by one of the best preserved,as well as one of the longest inscriptionsin the strange Hittite characters. Kasr Mounu, the Site of Nebuchadnezzars Palace and of the Sacred Procession Street 812 HARPERS MONTHLY MAGAZINE. to Hittite monuments have been foundonly in northern Syria and in variousparts of Asia Minor, where the Hittitesheld sway. The discovery, therefore, ofsuch a monument in the city of Babylonoccasioned no little surprise, and it is areasonable supposition that the stone wasbrought as a trophy to Babylon by someconqueror—possibly by Nebuchadnezzarhimself. The Hittite hieroglyphics stillconstitute a great puzzle, for although anumber of important points have beendetermined, and the general votive char-acter of the inscriptions recognized, asatisfactory key is as yet lacking. Mean-while the addition of fresh materialrepresented by the newly found monu-ment from Nebuchadnezzars palace isof great value to scholars now engaged inthe task of deciphering the mysteriouswriting.
