Soon, word hav-ing come that theEmperor was in hisaudience - chamber,we followed theministers for For-eign Affairs andCeremonies througha glass-covered wayinto the main Pal-ace building: this is quite new and inmodern style. As we were passingthrough the passage we caught a glimpseof some women and children. These,being of the imperial household, arenever allowed to go beyond the outerwall. The women did not appear strik-ing, and shared to the full the generalKorean feminine complaint of ugliness. Having entered the main building, wepassed through two small modern rooms,unfurnished except for flaring carpets ofEuropean manufacture. At the thresh- old of the second room the officials allprostrated themselves, and again as wepassed into the audience-chamber. Fromthe second room we turned at right angles

The Emperor of Korea to the left, and passing through an ordi-nary doorway, entered the audience-cham-ber, and found ourselves in the imperialpresence! It was a shock, yet hardlyin the expected sense; everything was sosmall, so unmajostic, and, above all, soun-Oriental. (magine a small, wooden,square room, the walls papered with badFrench paper, the ceiling whitewashed,a glaring red and green carpet on thefloor, and cheap-looking lace curtainsdraping an ordinary glass window.
