this greatjourney, one of his main objects was toenter the forbidden city of Lhasa dis- guised as a Persian. Happily he was welladvised to give up this mere feat, whichmay be left to the seeker after sensation,and confine himself to the solid work ofexploration. Before he left Stockholm on June 27,1899, he roughly sketched the plan whichhe proposed to follow. He was to pro-ceed direct to Kashgar, and startingfrom that city proposed to make a sat-isfactory map of the Yarkand Daria,hoping to arrive at Lob Nor in the au-tumn of the same year. He was to staythere the whole winter and make a surveyof the region, in order to ascertain towhat extent the position of this puzzling-lake had shifted in past times. SVEN HEDIN the summer of 1900 he was to travel innorthern Tibet for the purpose of mak-ing geological observations and collec-tions. He hoped to go as far as the im-portant Gangri range, and to spend thewinter at an elevation of over 16,000 feet,in order to study the climate of Tibet atthat season. In the spring of 1901 he wasto cross Tibet to India. Dr. Hedin stayed in Kashgar only solong as it was necessary to get the va-rious things required for his journey.From Kashgar he went on to Lailik, onthe Yarkand River, where he bought oneof the big ferry-boats used to take cara-vans across the river. He made the ar-rangements on this boat as comfortableas he could under the circumstances. HLY MAGAZINE.
