except for The Old Oak,by Dupre, and for The Edge ofthe Woods, by Rousseau, are repre-sented by works which, compared withthe treasures in American private col-lections, give only a faint suggestionof the poetry and grandeur of the group.After a reference to Courbet we couldtake up the beginning of our ownmodern landscape art in some earlierexamples of George Inness, in severalvery beautiful Wyants, and in the SandDunes, among others, of Homer Martin^this canvas being one of the most spirit-ually impressive and technically accom-plished that he ever painted. Lastly weshould get a taste of what impressionismstands for in a single canvas by Monetand in one by an American follower,Theodore Robinson. Indeed, throughout xc is tastes that weget rather than full impression, but tastesthat suggest the character and quality,forming an admirable basis for futuredevelopment. Such is practically true ofthe whole exhibition, but, oh! that itwere possible to arrange it in more con-sistent sequence!
