s the rocks and dry lands together. In the tremendous struggle that followed, the shriekingGiant clung to his end of the tossing boat, cowering withterror, while the God struggled with the Dragon, the watersroaring, the sky darkling, and the rocky earth-floor trem-bling beneath the conflict. In his superhuman striving, thefeet of Thor burst through the bottom of the boat, and, inGod-rage, he lifted high Mjollnir, his tremendous hammer,to dash the Serpent into fragments, and the Earth, if needbe, into chaos. At this supreme moment the Giant, gather-ing his scattered wits, whipped out his knife and severedthe fish ing-line, and the Serpent sank sullenly back againinto the depths of the sea. Thor, his rage turned from the Serpent to the Giant, smoteHymir with his fist, knocking him overboard into the sea;then, assuming his Godhood, he waded ashore, the thunderrumbling around his forehead, and the troubled waves wash-ing his thighs and knees as he strode shoreward through thebriny depths.

Hi The Fabry Morgana* Of a different sort, half mystical, half fanciful, are the obscure legends that sur-round that strange creature the Fairy Morgana. We know of her as a mysteriousbeing who appeared now and again in ancient legends, only to disappear into the dimenchantment that forever surrounds her. She was the sister of King Arthur andthe daughter of Pendragon. Now and then, in the mythical Arthurian legends, she figures as a strange, half-malevolent, half-benign enchantress, who dwells in the enchanted Isle of Avalon,far away in the West, of which she is the mistress and the queen. Here she holdsher court of fairy attendants, courtiers, and pages, to the music of lutes and zithersand of singing voices; here golden pinnacles rise into the still blue sky, only tovanish into fairy mist or to disappear into thin air at the near approach of mortalfisherman or hardy mariner; here flowers bloom forever, and golden fruit hangsforever from the boughs, and all is gladness and peace arid
