Description
English: Inscription: This statue's original inscription, written along its base under the axe, read:

'Edith finding the body of harold on the battle-field of hastings' It celebrates the moment at the end of the Battle of Hastings in 1066 when the remains of King Harold II, the last Anglo-Saxon King of England, were discovered and identified by his wife of 20 years, Edith Swan-neck. Made in 1875 by Charles Augustus William Wilke (c1832-1885) Donated to Hastings town in the same year by Lord Brassey (MP for Hastings 1868-1886)
