Title |
Harness pendant |
||
Description |
English: A cast copper alloy shield-shaped harness pendant. only the top portion survives, but this seems to have been a kite-shield of the style used in the 12th century. The long suspension loop survives intact. The surviving portion of the body is cracked diagonally. The surface is corroded, with a dark green patina. The face has integrally-cast decoration and a small amount of gilding survives. The decoration consists of horizontal stripes, each formed of two thin borders between which is a narrow zig-zag. Three stripes survive. The middle and lower stripes are close together. Between the upper and middle stripes is a broad space in which there is a frieze of apparently abstract form. This frieze consists of six squares with a zig-zag at the base of each and protruding lines at the top. It is unlikely that this design has any recognisable heraldic meaning, and as such it cannot be linked to any known figure. |
