Summary
[edit]DescriptionHarlow C. and Ethel Mann Curtiss House, Buffalo, New York - 20201121.jpg |
English: The Harlow C. and Ethel Mann Curtiss House, 100 Lincoln Parkway, Buffalo, New York, November 2020. A work of the locally prominent firm of Esenwein & Johnson, the original design of the building was a quite unusual take on the Georgian Revival: a rough-textured exterior of Onondaga limestone contrasts with a smooth-textured cornice topped with a full-fledged mutule, complete with triglyphs and guttae, while the porte-cochère at right shelters the main entrance sporting further Classical influence, namely a framing of flouted Doric columns supporting a triglyph-adorned frieze. However, a 1923 addition (namely, the two-story bay window at the center of the façade) added Tudor Revival elements (namely, the English-style carved strapwork in the parapet at top). An attorney, real estate investor, and politico of local prominence, Harlow Clarke Curtiss (1858-1933) was born in Utica but moved to Buffalo as a young boy, where he returned after his 1881 graduation from Trinity College in Hartford, Connecticut to work for the law firm of Cleveland and Bissel (whose senior partner was the soon-to-be President of the United States, Grover Cleveland), establishing his own practice soon after. Curtiss and his wife moved from their previous home on Delaware Avenue in 1905, and continued residing there until 1919. |
