Summary

[edit]
Description
English: Hark to Rover. Morris Lane, Kirkstall. This row of cottages, opposite Abbey Walk, has a strange name. Apparently there are several explanations for the name, one being that a child was lost in the grounds of Kirkstall Abbey and the family dog barked continuously on discovering her body. There used to be a pub adjacent to the cottages with the same name "a small secluded Inn, of bad reputation, and was used as a meeting place by highwaymen and poachers. Many are the wild and desperate adventures told within its walls by the lawless characters who assembled there." There is a modern pub a quarter of a mile away in Spen Lane also called Hark to Rover, and the Abbey House Museum contains a pub called Hark to Rover in its re-creation of an old street.
