Description

At the turn of the 19th century there seem to have been less than a dozen dwellings in what is now Harehills. But in 1817 the wool merchant, James Brown, wishing like other prosperous residents to escape the increasing noise, pollution, congestion, and crime of the town centre, and with the recent improvements to the turnpikes built a detached villa with stables and gatehouse in Harehills calling it ‘Harehills Grove’. The next family to move into Harehills Grove was the Jowett family and it was they who sold the 750-acre estate to build back-to-back terraced houses while the 30-acre park at the front of the mansion was kept. In 1900, the house and park were bought by the Leeds Corporation and Potternewton Park was created.

Between the wars the building was used as a school for children with special needs. In the 60’s Park Lane College took over the building. In 2006 it was purchased by the Sangat of Gurdwara Guru Hargobind Sahib Ji Bhat it is now a Sikh Gurdwara.
