| Description |
English: Hard, Bosham Channel The wooden stakes in the distance are not a former jetty but actually the remains of a 19th century attempt at land reclamation. In 1812 the part of Bosham Channel north of the line of stakes was blocked off and made into agricultural land, this part being the embankment or sea wall that was supposed to protect the inned land. However, a number of winter storms in 1825 broke the bank and innundated the reclaimed land the incoming saltwater rendering the fields useless. Consequently, the attempt was abandoned and Bosham Channel continued to run northwards towards Cut Mill though it was still possible to ford it as late as 1930. |
