Title
English: Harbor Island from downtown Seattle, ca. 1913
Description
English: With the expansion of Japanese trade and the start of construction on the Panama Canal, Seattle expected its port business to boom. Beginning around 1905, developers filled in an area of tide flats at the mouth of the Duwamish River for huge new piers and warehouses. This was called Harbor Island.

This photo, taken from downtown Seattle, shows Harbor Island in about 1913. The Duwamish River mouth has been split into east and west channels.

  • Subjects (LCTGM): Harbors; Islands; Reclamation of land; Waterfronts
Depicted place
English: Duwamish River Estuary (Wash.)

Harbor Island (Seattle, Wash.) Seattle (Wash.)

Standard Furniture (sign at left) was in what is now the Broadacres Building on the northwest corner of First and Pine, so this must be from atop the New Washington Hotel (now Josephinum) at the northeast corner of First and Stewart. It was the only thing in the area tall enough to be the point of view here, and it had a roof garden.
