Summary

Description

3 January 2010. At 72-74 Shelbourne Road Homes for Haringey was raising the standard of public housing as part of the Government's Decent Homes programme.

Outside, on the pavement, the rubbish dumpers and taggers were doing their bit to lower standards for Tottenham residents.

______________________________________________

Yes, I know. Christmas and New Year holidays interrupted waste and recycling schedules. With more dislocation at the end of December 2010 when London got winter snow. As usual, there are always plausible explanations for failure.

And, to be fair, there are also successes and reasons to be positive. Tottenham Hale ward - like other Haringey wards, now has a dedicated enforcement officer. (Ours is keen and open to new ideas.) Most of the time, dumped rubbish does get reported and cleared more quickly. The message has got across more widely about some of the free collections offered by Haringey - for electrical goods like fridges and TVs. Overall Recycling rates are up and rising.

And yet, "This will not do" - to use the phrase which Margaret Thatcher wrote furiously in the margins of papers she was given.

It will not do, and it doesn't have to be like this.

In my Flickr pages I've illustrated and commented on the problems. I and other local residents have suggested possible solutions.
