[edit]DescriptionHanzlian's Homemade Sausage & Deli - fmr Wahl's Candies, Elijah Fogelsonger House - Cheektowaga, New York - 20211020.jpg |
English: Hanzlian's Homemade Sausage & Deli, 2351 Genesee Street, Cheektowaga, New York, October 2021. Sources differ as to when exactly this old-fashioned vernacular T-plan farmhouse was built - some say it was as early as the 1820s, a time when the design was a common one around the rural areas of Western New York, with its classic gable-fronted left wing and the full-length porch on the side-gabled main portion enclosing the main entrance - but its first recorded owner didn't move in until around 1858. That owner was Elijah Fogelsonger (1830-1903), a native of the nearby town of Amherst and a grandson of John Fogelsonger, whose quarry was a major regional supplier of limestone at the time and whose house just west of Williamsville still stands as a noted local landmark. The younger Fogelsonger was a farmer whose 28 acres of land straddled either side of Genesee Street just next to the Buffalo city line, in the section of town known as Pine Hill, and he and his descendants lived in what was popularly known as "Chestnut House" through the 1920s. The additions to the left side of the house and the rear date to the mid-20th century, around the time the house was purchased by Clarence and Margaret Wahl to house Wahl's Candies, a neighborhood soda fountain and sweet shop that made the move from down the street in 1967 and stayed until 2004. They remain in business at their new location on Losson Road. Current tenants Hanzlian's Homemade Sausage has been manufacturing and selling their line of fresh Italian and Polish sausages at the site since 2006. |
