Description

Depiction of the Juliusbanner attributed to Hans Rüegger, ca. 1513. A reproduction of this sheet was printed with the chronicle of Johannes Stumpf (1554?).[1][2] In the center two flags of the "Holy Roman Church" with the blessed sword and hat. Sixteen banners are depicted, the banners of the "twelve cantons" mentioned in the papal address, numbered i. to xii., with four additional banners, the banner of Appenzell is given the number xiii, since Appenzell had acceded to the confederacy in 1513, while the banners were sent in 1512, but Rüegger's woodcut was made in 1513. The three additional banners are those of three "eternal associates", St. Gallen, Chur (for the League of God's House, in this composition representing the Three Leagues) and Wallis.

More banners were sent by Julius, their exact number is not known, additional banners not shown here likely included:

  • eternal associates: St. Gallen (abbot), St. Gallen (Alte Landschaft), the Grey League, the League of Ten Jurisdictions, Biel, Rottweil,
  • free cities: Baden, Bremgarten, Diessenhofen, Frauenfeld, Mellingen, Rapperswil, Willisau, Winterthur, Stein am Rhein,
  • lordships and condominiums: Saanen, Toggenburg, Kyburg, Elgg, Sargans, Freie Ämter, Thurgau (subjects of the bishop of Constance ), Rothenburg (subjects of Lucerne) and Ruswil (subjects of Lucerne).
Two additional banners were sent later, one for Nidwalden and one for Mulhouse, because Nidwalden complained that the banner for Unterwalden was being kept in Obwalden, and Mulhouse complained for being the only associate of the confederacy not to have received a banner.
