COSTUMES WORN BY BASEL LADIES 159 seen in the Dance of Death woodcuts. In several of them inwhich women are introduced, these costume studies are closelyfollowed ; for instance, in the little picture of the newly-marriedcouple, the wifes dress is almost identical with that in the firstdrawing of the Baseler Frauentrachten series ; and other dressesof the set are closely copied in such cuts as The Countess and the Arms of Death. These drawings, as already noted, show veryplainly the peculiar carriage of the body in walking which the ladiesof Basel adopted in Holbeins day, with the back hollowed so thatthe lower part of the figure was thrust forward, in a very ugly fashionto modern eyes, but no doubt necessary to some extent owing tothe length of the dress in front, which had always to be held up byone hand. There is a very beautiful costume study in the Library at Dessau,1which is closely allied to the Basel series. It is an exceedinglygraceful rendering of a fair lady in an elaborate
