Summary
[edit]DescriptionHans Holbein the Younger - Sir Philip Hoby RL 12210.jpg |
English: Black and coloured chalks, pen and Indian ink on pink-primed paper, 29.8 × 22.6 cm, Royal Collection, Windsor Castle. The drawing has been rubbed and softened; a fingerprint can be seen on the outline of the shoulder on the left.
Sir Philip Hoby (1505–1558) was a diplomat. He served as ambassador to the court of Spain, 1535–36, and later became ambassador to Charles V in 1548. Hoby and Holbein travelled together on missions to Brussels and Lorraine to find Henry VIII a fourth wife. A drawing inscribed "The Lady Hobbei" may be a portrait of his wife, Elizabeth. |
