Title
Hanging Bowl Eascutcheon from Blyburgh
Description
English:

Copper alloy with enamel

Mount. Escutcheon from a hanging bowl. Cast roundel bearing five trumpet spirals formerly coated in a (now) pale green enamel against a field of (now) off-white enamel; a central roundel retains enamel traces of a slightly more yellowish hue. Comparable designs occur on a range of hanging bowl fittings from Linconshire (Bruce Mitford 1993, Late Celtic Hanging Bowls, in Vince [ed.], Pre-Viking Lindsey, 45-70). The reverse is slightly concave as if formerly attached to a curving surface. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 450-650.

Diameter: 29mm, Thickness: 3.1mm, Weight: 8.74gms.
