Summary

[edit]
Description

Hangar 1, Naval Air Station Glenview (1923).

  • The base was operated by the U.S. Navy from 1938 to 1995. The main hangar was built in 1923 as a private venture with all of the latest advances in lighting and communication.
  • It hosted several prominent air races, such as the 1930 National Air Races and the 1933 Century of Progress International Air Races.
  • Intended to be the main airport of the Chicago area, the Curtiss-Reynolds airport never recovered after the Great Depression.
  • In 1938, the Navy began operations at the airport and took control of the base in anticipation of U.S. entry into World War II. It was mostly used for training pilots for aircraft carriers; they would land at Navy Pier on the USS Sable or USS Wolverine. Gerald Ford, George H. W. Bush, and Neil Armstrong all trained at this facility.
