It is found not only rangingover the greater part of the North Americancontinent but also central and northern Eu-rope, and Asia as far south as nearly to theMediterranean and to the Himilayas, but onlyin very limited areas of this vast domain doesit become a tree; in America only on the hillsof a few counties of southern Illinois. Itusually sends out a cluster of stems close tothe ground and these curving upwards form aflat saucer-shaped bush, sometimes 20 ft. acrossand only 3 or 4 ft. high. When a tree it attainsthe height of 20 or 30 ft. with an irregularopen head and short trunk sometimes 10-12 in.in diameter. Its wood is hard,
