reliable, and should not be used except for use in thedetermination of time and azimuths. (e) The probable error of the arithmetic mean of the six set.sof observations should not exceed r5. For method of obtainingprobable error see para 165 (c). Plate II.

160 CHAPTHR V. THEODOLITE TRAVERSES. i6o (a). Theodolite traverses are used to form the horizontalframework of the standard map in the forest and mangrove belts in Southern Nie^eria, where triantrulation is impossible.„ , The framework is formed by running the traverses between points whose latitudes have been deter-mined astronomically and longitudes fixed by telegraph. (b) These ruling points, as they may be called, should be from 50to 60 miles apart in latitude and longitude. There is no advantageto be gained by reducing these distances, as the following considera-tions will show. Note.—The trigonometrical point where a traversejoins the trigonometrical survey is a ruling point. The chief error in latitude observations is due to the inclinationof the plumbob, which can only be inferred after laborious andexpensive geodetic operations. It has, in extreme cases, been knownto amount to over 30 (giving a displacement of about 30CX3 ft.),and may, in an unknown country, be assumed to
