The Antique Lamp (lychmis, lucerna) is, strictly speaking, acombination of holder and pourer; and might with equal proprietyhave been included in the group of Vases. The fundamental form,which was retained down to the latest times, is found in earlyEgyptian household utensils; and is created by adding a handle, afunnel for filling, and a spout with an opening for the wick, to aspheroid body, figures 1 and 2. In Greek and Roman Lamps: the body becomes flattened, theftmnel contracts to a simple orifice, and the round handle is eitherreplaced by a straight one or combined with it, (figs. 4 and 9).Very frequently the lamp has several wick-openings (dimyxos, tri-myxos &c.) instead of only one, (figs. 5, 10 and 11).
