The sliapo of the Oblong is particularly adapted to receive botha bi-axial and a mon-axial txeatment; and as it is by far the most fre-viuently-uscd shape: numerous examples of the two treatments are tobe found in all styles. AVljen the Oblong is not sixb-divided (as shown on Plates 13 toIG.), the natural axes, around which the ornament is grouped are,for the bi-axial treatment, the two diameters, which join the centresof the opposite sides. These lines divide the figure into 4 smalleroblongs, each of which receives an identical decoration (com;).Plate 161, figs. 1—3, and Plate 162, figs. 1—5).
