mel-low whistle, more like the whistling of wind than a birds voice, maybe heard even in the night, and is one of the most weird and never-to-be-forgotten sounds in Nature. 262. Tryngites subru&collis ( Vieill.). Buff-breasted Sand-piper. Ad.—Upper parts pale grayish brown, the feathers with olive cen-ters ; primaries fuscous, the inner half of their inner webs specMed with hlack;longer inner wing-coverts conspicuously marked and tipped with black, thenwhite; central tail-feathers fuscous, outer ones becoming buffy, irregularlymarked and tipped with black and buffy; under parts pale ochraceous-buff,tipped with whitish, and with generally concealed black markings. Im.—Similar, but the upper parts and breast paler. L., 8-50 ; W., 5-25; B., -80. BemarTcs.—In any plumage this biixl may be known by the peculiar speck-ling on the inner webs of all the primaries, and also the markings of the underwing-coverts. Range.— North America, especially in the interior; breeds in the Yukon

Long Island, rare T. V., Aug. and Sept. Eggs^ three to four, buify grayish wlaite, varying to pale olive-bufF, boldlyspotted longitudinally (and somewhat spirally) with dark Vandyke- or mad-der-brown and purplish gray, 1-53 x 1-04 (Kidgw.). This is a rare species on the Atlantic coast. Dr. Hatch writes ofit as observed by him in Minnesota: They are an extremely activespecies when on the wing, and essentially ploverine in all respects,seeking sandy, barren prairies, where they live upon grasshoppers,crickets, and insects generally, and ants and their eggs specially. Ihave found them repasting upon minute mollusks on the sandy shoresof small and shallow ponds, where they were apparently little moresuspicious than the Solitary Sandpipers are notably. The flight is inrather compact
