tal may or may not be requiredand, if used, it is to be regarded as an addi-tion to the Order, the relative dimensions ofthe parts of which are not altered by itsremoval or introduction. The diameter of the column (by which ismeant the diameter of the shaft following itslower cincture) is the ruling dimension fromwhich most of the others are obtained, and thesmaller circumference of the top of the shaftalways coincides with the frieze line fromwhich all the projections of the entablatureare set out. The general proportions allottedto the columns of the Orders apply also topilasters, which may be regarded as columnssquare on plan, but almost universally deeplyengaged. The projection of pilasters must beregulated by circumstances. If impostmouldings or other projections stop uponthem, as on the inner wall of an arcade, these projections must be sufficient to takethe mouldings, and if they line with en-gaged columns crowned by an entablature, they must have a projection similar to thecolumns, and therefore in such cases neverless than a semi-diameter.
