Steam heating may be classified under a number of different heads, although thetwo prominent systems are the gravity and vacuum systems. These may be subdividedinto up-feed, down-feed, double pipe, single pipe, indirect, direct, etc. The gravity system is the one in which the condensation falls by its own weightand returns either to the boiler, hot well or receiver, through either a wet or dry return.Where it is possible a system should be so installed that it could operate as a gravitysystem, even though a vacuum system is contemplated in connection with it. In the vacuum systems the condensation is usually pumped back by means of avacuum pump and some form of thermostatic valve.
