Section of the anterior four-fifths of the eyeball. the eyeball: continuous with it, in front, and occupying theremaining sixth, is the cornea. Immediately within the scleroticis the choroid coat, and within the choroid is the retina. Theinterior of the eyeball is well-nigh filled by the aqueous and vitreoushumours and the crystalline lens ; but, also, there is suspended inthe interior a contractile and perforated curtain,âthe iris, forregulating the admission of light, and behind at the junction ofthe sclerotic and cornea is the ciliary muscle, the function ofwhich is to adapt the eye for seeing objects at various distances. Structure of the Sclerotic Coat.âThe sclerotic coat is com-posed of white fibrous tissue, with some elastic fibres near theinner surface, arranged in variously disposed and interlacing GH. xvii.) It is separated from the choroid by a considerable lym-phatic space (perichoroidal), and this is in connection with smallerspaces lined with endothelium in the sclerotic coat itself. Thereis a lymphatic space also outside the sclerotic separating it froma loose investment of connective tissue called the capsule of Tenon.
