Distribution.— This va-riety of tissue makes upthe stroma of the spleenand lymphatic glands, andis found also in the thymus,in the tonsils, in the folli-cular glands of the tongue, in Peyers patches, and in the solitaryglands of the intestines, and in the mucous membranes generally. Structure.— Adenoid orretiform tissue consists ofa very delicate network ofminute fibrils, formed origi-nally by the union of pro-cesses of branched connec-tive-tissue corpuscles, thenuclei of which, however,are visible only during theearly periods of develop-ment of the tissue (fig. 46).The nuclei found on thefibrillar meshwork do notform an essential part of it.The fibrils are neither whitefibres nor elastic tissue, asthey are insoluble in boil-ing water, although readilysoluble in hot alkaline solu-tions. The lymphoid cor-puscles found in the inter-stices of the tissue aresmall round cells, the protoplasm of which is practically occupiedby. their spherical .nuclei. -

DEVELOPMENT OF FIBKOUS TISSUE. 49 Development of Fibrous Tissues.—In the embryo theplace of the fibrous tissues is at first occupied by a mass ofroundish cells, derived from the mesoblast. These develop either into a network of branched cells or intogroups of fusiform cells (fig. 47). The cells are embedded in a semi-fluid albuminous substancederived either from the cells themselves or from the neighbouringblood-vessels ; this afterwards forms the cement substance. In itfibres are developed, either by some of the cells becoming fibrils,the others remaining as connective-tissue corpuscles, or by thefibrils being developed from the outside layers of the protoplasm
