6, placed in the interior ofthe pulmonary artery, a part of the anterior wall of that vessel having been removed,and a narrow portion of it preserved at its commencement, where the semilunar valvesare attached; 7, concavity of the aortic arch close to the cord of the ductus arteriosus;8, ascending part or sinus of the arch covered at its commencement by the auricularappendix and pulmonary artery ; 9, placed between the innominate and left carotidarteries ; 10, appendix of the left auricle ; 11, n, the outside of the left ventricle, thelower figure near the apex. (Allen Thomson.) is of oval form, and admits three fingers. Various veins, includingthe coronary sinus, or the dilated portion of the right coronaryvein, open into this chamber. In the appendix are closely set 174 CIKCULATION OF THE BLOOD. (ch. VI. elevations of the muscular tissue covered with endocardium, andon the anterior wall of the auricle are similar elevations arrangedparallel to one another, called musculi pectinati.
