The first-class hotels and numerous boarding-houses are over-taxed in summer time to accommodate the throng of visitors whocome from every direction, north, east, south, and west. Duringthe past year cottages have sprung up with a rapidity and innumbers without a parallel in the history of Atlantic City, or ofany other resort in the world. These cottages find occupants inthe spring, most of whom remain until October. Life at Atlantic City in summer is buoyant, gay, and attractive,and draws many thousands to enjoy the hospitality of its people.The hotels are often taxed to their utmost to accommodate the 48 Illustrated Hand-Book of Atlantic City, N. J. number of arrivals. As many as thirty thousand people have beenknown to arrive here in a single day, and the aggregate numberof guests at one time has exceeded seventy-five thousand. The sum-mer rush and crush reaches its height about the first of August,when the city itself puts on its gayest attire.
