Summary
[edit]DescriptionHampstead Heath, Whitestone Pond (under repair) - geograph.org.uk - 1718760.jpg |
English: Hampstead Heath: Whitestone Pond (under repair) Whitestone Pond was originally a small dew pond called the Horse Pond, but was later named after a nearby milestone. In 1875 it was enlarged and lined. With a water level at about 440 feet or about 134 metres above sea level it is one of the highest ponds in London.
In 2010 the pond has been drained for a major refurbishment to be undertaken with completion scheduled for around the end of the summer. The project includes relining the pond so that water levels can be increased, creating a new reed bed, installing a granite edge to the pond and a cobbled ramp into it, repaving the footway around it with York stone, realigning the kerblines of the adjacent roads, and installing water quality improvement equipment. |
