Summary
[edit]DescriptionHammond 1B typewriter.png |
English: Woodcut of Hammond typewriter from 1880s, from a mail-order catalog for library supplies. It was invented by American journalist James Bartlett Hammond in the 1870s and manufactured by the Hammond Typewriter Co., New York, starting in 1881-1884. This is the Hammond model 1B. Besides the curved keyboard, Hammond machines had other unique features. The typefaces were on two semicircular typewheels, and could be changed, allowing the machine to type in other fonts and languages. Instead of the types striking the paper, a hammer behind the page strikes a rubber sheet, driving the paper into the ribbon and typewheel. The phrase 'WORK IN SIGHT' meant that, unlike most typewriters of the time, the typist was able to see the text as she was typing it. For information, see Richard Milton Hammond, Portable Typewriters website. Alterations: removed caption.
From the accompanying text: "The Library Bureau model Hammond typewriter is fitted with a special attachment for holding catalog or index cards, and also has a type-wheel with the special cataloging characters recommended for catalog work... Prices: Hammond machine (in mahogony, walnut, or oak case): $100. Additional Type Shuttles, each: $2.50. Ribbon: $1.00." |
