Summary
[edit]DescriptionHamilton's Seat - geograph.org.uk - 476052.jpg |
English: Hamilton's Seat I was expecting this feature named on the OS map to be a rock formation, but it turns out that it is in fact a seat, at a viewpoint on the west side of Benbane Head. The trace of the lower path, now closed, can be seen climbing from below the columnar basalt through the red lateritic layer and scree to reach the top of the cliff by a set of rough steps, now blocked off. Hamilton's Seat is just beside the top of the path. It was named after the Reverend Doctor William Hamilton, who in 1786 was the first to publish an accurate description of the geology here. |
