Summary
[edit]DescriptionHaltern. Curle 1917, p. 135 fig.4.jpg |
English: Cup found at the fortress of the roman camp of Aliso in Haltern am See, Germany. In Curle, 1917, p.135 fig.4. Curle says about it :
« excavations of 1909 […] cup raised upon a foot- stand. The rim is formed by a distinct moulding on which may be noted parallel roulette lines. Defining the upper margin of the decorative zone is an ovolo border, a feature which continues throughout the whole sigillata period. In the decorative frieze are groups of girls playing a game with four knucklebones. In each group the girls are seated on low stools facing each other, while between them stands a low table supported on legs terminating in claws; the knucklebones lie on the table. Beneath the figures is a wavy line in relief, and beneath it a band of palmettes. The vessel has no maker's stamp, but [according to Hahnle, "Ausgrabungen bei Haltern: Die Keliefkelche," Mitteilungen der Altertums-Kommission fur Westfalen, Heft vi. p. 80] it is probably from the pottery of Ateius. » Français : Coupe trouvée en 1909 sur le site de la forteresse du camp romain d'Aliso à Haltern am See, Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, Allemagne.
