Description

Photograph of Plastics, mural by Eric Mose for the the Hall of Industrial Science at the 1939 New York World's Fair

Press release attached to reverse side of print held by the New York Public Library identifies the mural's title as Plastics — not Chemical and Plastics as seen on the postcard and repeated in other sources. The press release reads as follows:

  • The "Plastics" mural of Eric Mose on the Avenue of Labor facade of the Hall of Industrial Science at the New York World's Fair 1939 represents the natural elements on the left going through chemical processes (center) to become plastics material (right). The center portion of the mural represents a Bunsen burer, a test tube with a thermometer in it, while the fine-lined circles represent the structure of an atom. To the left of the Bunsen burner are layers under the ground representing coal and its tar products. To the right of the burner is a bolt of finished rayon cloth. In executing this mural, Eric Mose used a rubber-base paint which is weather resistant. "Plastics" is one of 110 Fair-commissioned murals.
