Summary
[edit]DescriptionHalifax North bridge-Old station - geograph.org.uk - 1042120.jpg |
English: Halifax North bridge-Old station This car park was the original site of Halifax North bridge station, The line was built by the Great Northern Railway in 1880, It closed to passengers trains in 1955.
The goods yard remained in operation until 1974. This section of line between Holmfield and Queensbury involved some serious excavation work. Strines cutting and Queensbury tunnel take up most of the 2 1/4 mile stretch. Water made the work difficult, to this day the southern end of Queensbury tunnel is completely flooded. Goods traffic began rolling on 14th October 1878. Queensbury station was opened on Easter Saturday 1879, North Bridge opened on 25th March 1880. After a bit of local pressure an additional station at Ovenden was opened in June 1881.
