Title
English: Halibut fishermen preparing longlines, ca. 1909
Description
English: Longline halibut fishing gear was handled in units of line called "skates." Each skate held 100-120 hooks baited with fish. The crew attached a number of skates together into a string 1,800 to 2,000 feet long. Baiting the hooks and keeping the lines in good shape took a great deal of time.

This photo shows the crew repairing longlines and preparing the skates for the next catch. It was taken sometime between 1902 and 1916 in the northern Pacific Ocean, probably on the halibut steamer "Independent."
