DescriptionHaarlem House along the Spaarne.jpg | Vlietsorg, Buitenrustlaan 29, Haarlem. House along the Spaarne River in Haarlem, the Netherlands. Built originally by Pieter van Zel at some time in the years 1638 - 1670, on a property that had already been in use as a summer home. The Spaarne river was known for its purity and many wealthy Haarlem and Amsterdam families fled the stinking canals of the downtown areas in summertime. The Spaarne was a fashionable place to have a summer home. The wealthy Haarlem goldsmith Hendrik Pieter de Pauw (1735-1804) bought this property in the 18th century and remodelled the house in 1791. The house directly south of this one (partially visible on the left) was the bollenschuur (bulb shed) or orangerie (now Buitenrustlaan 31). Soon after this remodelling was done, in 1808 it was bought by Louis Bonaparte (Napoleon's brother) as part of his plan to expand the gardens of his summer palace Paviljoen Welgelegen, which at that time comprised much of the land between the Dreef and the Spaarne. | ||
