Description

Two years ago, we attempted and failed at Chinaman Peak (very distinguishable and visible from Canmore). We weren't sure what to expect and the only other hike we've done at the time was Tunnel Mountain. We had met a hiker one early morning on Tunnel Mountain and he was telling us about the Alan Kane Scramble in the Canadian Rockies book (on my desk right now). Ha Ling Peak aka Chinaman Peak was listed as easy and we thought we'd give it a try.

Like a complete dumbass, I was unprepared and we had lots of picnic supplies, ice packs and I was dragging a big tripod. Ha Ling Peak is in no way comparable to the difficulty of Tunnel Mountain. We found out the hard way what a scramble is and what exposure means haha. We made it to the back side of Miner's Col and I had to stop as I was cramping like crazy and couldn't continue, so we called it quits and went back down.

Looking back now from the tip, it was the right call at the time. It took us another hour from the col to the very tip. We were very happy to have finally made it all the way up Chinaman Peak.

Some of you may have noticed that my settings lately are somewhat consistent at ISO200, f8.0 and 1/800. That's because Sunny 16 says on a bright sunny day at f16, your shutter speed should be 1/ISO. Adjusted for 2 stops from f16 to f8, we get f8 and 1/800. Using old mechanical cameras really helps with guessing exposure and conditions and helps me use a digital camera better and faster.

That should finish off our Fall hikes this year. Thanks for looking!
