Summary

[edit]
Description
English: As seen in May 2020: the three-story brick building at 1540 Main Street (corner West Ferry Street) in Buffalo, New York dates to c. 1916 and is, according to its Building Inventory Form filed with the state Division for Historic Preservation, an "excellent example of a commercial block with Romanesque styling", namely a prominent bracketed cornice with bands of corbeling below and splayed lintels with projecting keystone voussoirs crowning most of the second- and third-story windows. Sadly, the ground floor, which once featured a recessed corner entrance flanked by Classical pilasters, was heavily altered in a 2011 renovation which also saw the construction of the rear addition seen at furthest left. The north side of the building is bedecked with a restored ghost sign for Touraine Paints, not seen here but visible in this view from the north. The building housed the Superior Vulcanizing Works as of 1920, a bakery owned by S. W. Allio and H. Gillies as of 1921, and currently contains the offices of HOME (Housing Opportunities Made Equal), a fair housing advocacy group, as well as ten units of energy-efficient affordable housing.
