Description
English: HMS Volage

Oil painting, showing the ship in two positions off Tynemouth, with the ruins of Tynemouth priory on the headland. The location and general style suggest the artist may be John Scott (active 1844-66, and compare BHC2218) who worked in the Newcastle area and painted many ship portraits with similar backgrounds. The large object floating in the water, lower right, may have the remains of a signature along the edge, but if so it is too damaged to be easily read. [PvdM 7/09]
