Summary
[edit]DescriptionHMS Spiteful under way.jpg |
English: Anonymous photograph of HMS Spiteful (1899) under way. That the ship is painted black and has a shield for the after steering position indicates that the photograph was probably taken very early in her career – she was completed in February 1900 – and certainly no later than 1905: an "as fitted" plan of September that year shows the shield as removed.[1] Although the top of Spiteful's mast is omitted in this image, comparison with other, contemporary photographs of similar ships, for example at Lyon, D. (2005), The First Destroyers, p. 80, indicates that the tail of a Royal Navy pennon flying from the top of the mast can be seen just behind it. Given its length, this may be a commissioning pennant. Spiteful's round-topped, "turtleback" forecastle was a common feature on Royal Navy ships of its type at the time. The spars carried lengthwise on her forecastle are boat hooks (compare Lyon (2005), p. 99). |
