Summary
[edit]DescriptionHMS Neptune memorial Dunedin.jpg |
Memorial to the sailors who died on the HMS Neptune (20), in Dunedin, New Zealand. The plaques read: HMS Neptune Early in World War 2 the British cruiser HMS Neptune was scheduled to join the New Zealand Naval Squadron in the Pacific, and 150 New Zealanders were assigned to her crew. Due to the increasing enemy activity she was held in the Mediterranean. On the night of 19th December 1941 while leading a force to intercept a supply convoy near Tripoli, Neptune entered an uncharted minefield and sand after striking 4 mines. All but one of the crew of 764 including the 150 New Zealanders perished, effectively creating New Zealand's worst naval disaster. Of these, 30 were from Otago. Representing The Royal New Zealand Navy, Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, Royal New Zealand Naval Volunteer Reserve, and other volunteers, most would have trained at HMNZS Toroa in St Andrew St and on the upper reaches of the Otago Harbour. This memorial honours all these men, in particular those from Otago whose names are recorded here. We will remember them. Men from Otago lost in HMS Neptune 19-12-1941
