Description |
English: HMS 'Renown' leaving Portsmouth with HRH The Prince of Wales, 16 March 1920 Signed by the artist in the lower left margin. This etching shows the battlecruiser 'Renown' (1916) in broad starboard-bow view, as she pulls away from South Railway Jetty in Portsmouth Harbour on 16 March 1920, with HRH The Prince of Wales on board for his 1920 tour of the United States, Australia and New Zealand via the Panama Canal. The depiction of 'Renown' is not particularly accurate in that she has too low a silhouette: her superstructure, funnels and masts were higher. Tugs are assisting her to unberth but they are not well drawn as one of the tugs was the 'St Just' (1918) and none of these look like her. On the left is the 'Victory' (1765) dressed overall and firing a salute. The submarine at moorings in the foreground is a former German vessel of the UB-III type, surrendered at the end of the First World War. See also PAE2654 and PAF2133. |
